Onto the actual movie review, which I plan on rambling through so don’t worry about none of this being a cohesive paragraph.
Chris was clearly a fuckup from the moment the movie began but looking back on the movie I didn’t notice until it was over that the dog wasn’t going apeshit at everyone just Chris because the dog knew he was a worthless waste. I don’t particularly like Thomas Haden Church but he’s one of the guys out there that can pull off stupid enough to fall into Chris’ stupid plan without bothering to think of whether they can pull it off or not, so kudos to casting. I did have a problem with the opening scene that Chris somehow went from being drenched in a downpour to having his most done-up hairstyle in the movie at the strip club- awesome under the stage walkway though, and why was Ansel’s window all the way down in the rain- just so Dottie can conveniently overhear them?
Maybe it’s because I just watched American Psycho but Killer Joe the character reminded me a lot of Patrick Bateman, could just be the fact that he seems to pride himself in how well manicured he is but quickly shows with his sexual interactions with Dottie and later K Fried C that he has some issues of his own. He’s a sociopath but he’s also the closest thing the movie has to a hero. That said, I’m guessing Drew hated this movie because there’s no one to root for. I suppose an argument could be made that Dottie is worth rooting for if only that you’re rooting for the young girl portrayed as slightly retarded to not end up with a life of being raped by Killer Joe and/or running away with her worthless brother. If that’s who you’re pulling for then you’re a winner!
All in all it was probably a C or C+ movie that was elevated into a B- with the what the fuck closing scene. Too bad Joe destroyed the tv, it’d be great if he’d have flipped on the radio for dinner music and the tune switched just in time to hear Billy Corgan belting lyrics as Joe began pounding on Chris with a can of pumpkins. I loved stupid Ansel holding up Chris and encouraging Joe to continue beating him to death. Had there been a 10 second clip after the credits rolled of Rex walking in and saying you ready to go Dottie and them grabbing the check and leaving I may have even bumped all the way to B+
I do have to include my comment on the scene where the bikers beat the shit out of Chris- worst beatdown choreography ever- those boots were missing him by 3 feet from a camera angle across the street. It was hilarious though when they said you know he really does like you before they began the beating.
