An Unmarried Woman

A divorced woman readjusts to single life.

Directed by Paul Mazursky
Starring Jill Clayburgh
Initial Review by Drew Landry

Picture
An Unmarried Woman chronicled the life of Erica Benton who struggled to find her place and herself after learning her husband Martin planned to leave her for a younger woman.

To put it bluntly, the film did not get interesting until the end.  To see Erica dating and finding herself were defining moments.  The reason they were defining moments were for the time of the film and Erica's role in the feminist movement.  Erica had moments where she could have stood down to the men in her life but she held her ground.

Despite the strength and sensitivity of Erica and her important role in the display of feminism in media, it was drowned out by the uninspired story of director Paul Mazursky.  The film lasted thirty minutes too long and the supporting cast was equally uninteresting as the story.

A boring story mixed with a tired supporting cast and a great last twenty minutes equals an average piece.

Early 90's grunge enthusiasts look for love.

Directed by Cameron Crowe
Starring Bridget Fonda, Matt Dillon, and Campbell Scott
Initial Review by Drew Landry

Picture
There are few times in history where I wish I could be at certain points in my life.  And to be in my mid – twenties during the beginning moments of the grunge rock revolution and the craze over coffee in 1992 Seattle, Washington, is one of those times. Automatically, Singles got off to a great start with footage of its scenery and soundtrack.  The music in this film was sublime but more on that later.

The story of Singles was nothing new as it has been played numerous times from Breakfast at Tiffany’s to The Wedding Singer to nearly any Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock film.  What sets Singles apart from them was twofold.  One was its time and relevance.  These characters talked about sex and dating in an honest and open manner.  The tide was turning in our culture around this point on sex’s open discussion and Singles aided in that effort.  Nowadays, viewers see this discussion and do not flinch.  We view it as a commonplace but it was not that way in the early nineties.

A first-year law student at Harvard Law School struggles with balancing his coursework and his relationship with the daughter of his sternest professor.

Directed by James Bridges
Starring Timothy Bottoms, Lindsay Wagner, John Houseman
Initial Review by Drew Landry

Picture
The Paper Chase was a classic film concerning a law student trying to succeed in a class with a stern professor.  James Hart – the protagonist – never understood the antics of his contracts professor and Harvard legend Charles Kingsfield.  Hart’s frustration was prevalent to the point he constantly complained about the shrewd professor to the point of ad nauseam.  Even his lady friend, whose shocking identity was revealed, grew weary of his fussing.  To her, it was almost an obsession and his inability to subside it pushed her away from him.

The Princess Bride

While home sick in bed, a young boy's grandfather reads him a story called The Princess Bride.

Directed by Rob Reiner
Starring Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, and Robin Wright
Initial Review by Drew Landry

Picture
The Princess Bride cleverly told an old story.  It was the classic tale of a damsel in distress but also reminded us of the difficult relationship between the grandfather and grandson.  It told two continual, yet competing stories, one with the book by "S Morganstern" and the other played by Fred Savage and Peter Falk.  Doing that is a recipe for disaster because it takes a careful hand to guide a story through such precision and Rob Reiner pulled it off masterfully.  In the end, viewers learned the power of love but not in a gooey way.  The Princess Bride showed loves influence through comedy, sport, adventure, and suspense. Its ability to successfully achieve these aspects made it an instant classic for all generations.

A young woman's world unravels when a drug prescribed by her psychiatrist has unexpected side effects.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh
Starring Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, and Jude Law
Initial Review by Drew Landry

Picture
Side Effects was a mystery thriller that took viewers on a topsy - turvy, psychological path.  The direction, writing, and acting was something the MMC has yet to appreciate in that kind of genre and it was something the group needed to view.
