Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer Talk

10/10/2017

Sean Riley provides his expectations and running commentary on the latest Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer:

For some background, let me tell you about my own Star Wars relationship and why I am the definitive voice for The Last Jedi Trailer 2 breakdown:
  • I rank somewhere between 2-5 in the MMC in Star Wars fandom.
  • I’m more fan than fanboy
  • I’ve seen every Star Wars movie in theatres and countless times at home but never on the midnight openers.
  • I am familiar with the existence of additional non-theatrical Star Wars material (Rebels, Clone Wars) but have not watched them.
  • I am willing to click on the theory clickbait articles but don’t put much stock in them so I am familiar with many but not a true believer in any in order to cloud my judgement.
  • Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes is one of 2 go to games I play on my phone.

Now it’s time for the breakdown. ***never gonna get it never gonna get it***

(start trailer now)

Dark opener, Snoke voiceover on Kylo’s raw power with a cut to Rey. - While an aspect of Force Awakens, Last Jedi looks to draw heavy on symmetries of Kylo and Rey

Rey, always had the Force inside now it’s awake. - Yea we remember the last movie was called The Force Awakens.

Luke’s seen this strength before (crawls from the rubble to see the Jedi temple in flames) it didn’t scare him before it does now - Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. I feel like Luke might be a shitty Jedi, we know of one student he had and it didn’t work out. And now he is breaking a cardinal rule.

Kylo attacking, ready to shoot what is edited to appear to be Leia’s ship. – Space battle tech has really come a long way in 40 years, looks like this space battle is gonna be badass.

A Porg - no thoughts

Poe Dameron inspirational speech - Oscar Isaac is on the short list of best actors in the Star Wars universe so give him all the big speeches.

Finn vs Phasma - John Boyega probably called Maisie Williams for tips on this fight, Phasma likely wins it this time. Look for the rubber match in part IX

Ice wolves - I wonder how much they cost compared to GoT direwolves.

Luke on his back in the rain, “This is not going to go how you think” - cut to assume he’s talking to Rey, but is he referring to training being hard or possibly calling back to the last trailer when he said it’s time for the Jedi to end

AT-AT battle on the red clay - Looks like we will get 3-4 large scale battles in Last Jedi in addition to any 1-1 confrontations.

Fulfill your destiny, Snoke force torturing Rey - Snoke being such a mystery from Force Awakens did lead to many theories- one of which is that he is Emperor Palpatine survived through sheer will and force ability but he is severely damaged and disfigured. Could his interest in Kylo’s raw power and now Rey’s be based on his own ability to draw from that power for himself? Is that what he is referring to as her destiny?

Rey talking to Kylo looking for a teacher- Kylo reaches out - Is Rey now turning dark? Obviously the moments in the trailer aren’t all going to be chronological in the movie and they wouldn’t cut it to completely give away the plot but rather to generate additional buzz for a franchise that doesn’t need any more help. Will Luke’s reluctance to teach lead Rey to look elsewhere, maybe but it could just as well be Rey feeling around for the last glimmer of good in Kylo just like Luke and Darth in Episode VI.

Be sure to check back around New Years when I make it to the theatre to watch Last Jedi a few weeks after it is released on December 15.
