For a show which has previously dedicated itself to destruction and death, this episode was straight out of a Disney fairy tale. Did anything bad happen besides Arya getting beat up with a stick?

I don't really think the second one was supposed to be a joke. I found it more to be a way for Davos to leave them alone so. But the Khal joke is definitely horrible.

Does Cersei's acknowledgement that she's a monster and sadness that she lost her good and pure daughter equal sympathy from the viewer or do her past and likely future deeds cancel that out?

This was not a good episode in my opinion. Nothing really moved forward and everything was a set up for later, but even the setups were boring. The only thing that actually happened was when Brienne of Tarth (possibly my favorite character) came and rescued Sansa Stark and I guess you can throw in the Switcheroo at the end, but that really was still some setup and I don't count setup as things happening. Sort of like in Avengers Age of Ultron was all set up.
