#1 The Dark Knight v. #2 The Avengers
So here we are, at the end, my friend.* Well at least I seeded the top two correctly. There’s not much left to say about these two films, especially since I’ve never seen the Avengers. Even though I selected Guardians last round, I’m not upset it lost to The Dark Knight at all because despite its crazy flaws, I love this movie. I’m an admitted Bale fanboy and Ledger gives the best performance ever in any Comic Book Superhero movie. On the Avengers side, I’m biased. I’m just not a fan of Robert Downey Jr., so that’s probably why I’ve stayed away from that franchise. At the end of the day, I don’t think this one is gonna be close. I think The Dark Knight takes this by 10+ votes. The real battle would have been Guardians v. Avengers.

Good times everyone. I had fun doing this. Hope you moderately enjoyed this adventure and it changed your life forever.

*Just writing that line makes me think of my sophomore English class. We all had to write a poem and then recite it to our choice of music. One kid had The Doors Album and became a god for the week. I think every boy used that album.

Allow me to indulge myself as I make the case for The Avengers.

In short, The Avengers is nothing short of impossible expectations fulfilled. It was a plan nearly a decade and five movies in the making. Two Iron Man movies, one Hulk movie, one Thor movie, and one Captain America movie, all building up to the ultimate spectacle. There were too many characters - no way everybody gets a fair shake. The villain was a rehash - how's that going to be intimidating? Somehow, it all came together in a fun package that managed to exceed expectations while still paving the way for Phase II of the MCU. It's an achievement both as a standalone and in the context of how it was built.

Don't get me wrong, The Dark Knight is an incredible movie. Or is it really an incredible performance? Heath Ledger as the Joker is the gold standard now and forever of villainous performances, but one great performance does not the greatest superhero movie of all time make. The plot is a smidge of a mess as the third act falls apart pretty spectacularly. Bale turns in what is probably his weakest performance of the three.

The Dark Knight may win on the strength of Ledger, but The Avengers is the pinnacle of a super hero movie. I voted for it, and it deserves the win here.

I think that's a fair assessment. But acquiescing as such does not create page clicks.

The Avengers are stupid. But not as stupid as you. You're probably on all the drugs Robert Downy Jr used to do.
