What to watch - April 2019

4/1/2019

I’m building my April Watchlist. Based on the movies being released in April to streaming sites, here it goes...

Popular movies I haven’t seen in a long time.

I am Legend - Netflix.
Snatch - Netflix. This deserves a rewatch, much like every “saw it in college” movie.
Beetlejuice - Amazon. How did Joe give this a C?
Mean Girls - HBO

Popular movies I haven’t seen.

The Fifth Element - Netflix.
Addams Family Values - Amazon. This has some bad ratings.
Blade - Amazon. This has to be 1A, right Shane?
Chinatown - Amazon. Jon and Lane both scored this highly. It’s a classic, right?
Days of Thunder - Amazon
Die Another Day - Amazon. Is this a Bond movie?
The World is Not Enough - Amazon. What is this?
Overboard (1987) - Amazon
A Time to Kill - HBO
Crazy Rich Asians - HBO. My significant other will want to see this so it’s really number 1 on the watchlist due to her automatic override.
BlacKkKlansman - HBO. Gotta stay hip with new-ish releases.

Somebody’s recommendation

Burning - Netflix - April 29. Jon gave this an A.

MMC says you should see.

A Quiet Place - Creative and good.
The Imitation Game - Netflix. This is worth watching although it should probably be a much darker movie.
The Hateful Eight - Netflix. All its overratedness shows up April 25. I’d skip it but Jon, Bobby, and Shane all like it.
In a World - Amazon. See note for Hateful Eight.
Up in the Air - Amazon. See note for Hateful Eight.

Final April Watchlist
  1. BlacKkKlansman
  2. Burning
  3. Blade
  4. Beetlejuice
  5. Chinatown
  6. The Fifth Element
  7. Crazy Rich Asians
  8. The World is Not Enough
  9. A Time to Kill
  10. Die Another Day
  11. Overboard
  12. Days of Thunder
  13. Mean Girls
  14. I am Legend
  15. Snatch
  16. Addams Family Values

MMC 2017 Summer Movie Wager (Updated)

The MMC's trying out a new game, and you can, too!  We're predicting the top ten highest-grossing movies of the summer (plus three wild cards), with the winner to get a to-be-determined prize or maybe force a to-be-determined penalty on the losers.  We'll figure it out.

The rules apply for movies released between May 5 and Labor Day Weekend.  Using Box Office Mojo, we'll revisit how everyone did in September.  We've got 7 MMC'ers pitting their forecasting skills against each other.  The points system, pulled from Slash Film, is as follows:

  • Getting number 1 or number 10 dead-on gets you 13 points (each).
  • 10 points for numbers 2-9 dead-on
  • 7 points if your pick was only one spot away from where it ended up
  • 5 points if it was two spots away
  • 3 points if your pick is anywhere in the Top 10
  • 1 point for each dark horse that makes it into the Top 10
The scoring is tabulated so that you get the SINGLE HIGHEST point value for each pick- that is, if you get number ten right, you don’t get 13+3, you only get 13.

Mediocre Madness 2017

3/7/2017

Sadly the blue pen from 2016 is gone.  But it's time for this year's 39 movie, Mediocre Madness.  Dust off your obscure movie knowledge, and vote!  Play-In games close on Friday the 10th at noon.

3/9 Update. The play-in games are over. Good. Thinking about those movies makes me irritated. The Jungle Book could upset Room as we begin the first 4 games of Round 1. Here we go!

3/14. Tucker and Dale with the big first round upset! Next 4 after the first 5 are up. Whoops. Go vote!
